Get Up in the Cool features conversations and musical collaborations with some of Old Time music's heaviest hitters, like Ken Perlman, Adam Hurt, Spencer & Rains, and Jake Blount. As an interviewer, Cameron balances an effusive curiosity for the potential of traditional music with a dogged respect for its origins. Serving as audience surrogate, Cameron asks illuminating questions to Old Time's best and brightest while telling the larger story of the tradition's modern era.

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool, Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. This week’s friend is one of my favorite flat-pickers, songwriters, and old time musicians, Ethan Hawkins. I met him at Mt. Airy a couple years ago, and immediately got a big ol’ crush on him. He’s a very good guitarist, with a dreamy voice, and he’s a very animated performer, so I’m really glad I got him on video. Oh, did I not mention that? Check out Get Up in the Cool's Facebook page and you'll find some videos from this episode.
Tunes we'll play:
Josie-O
New Harbor
How’s Your Family Been? (what’s the official title?)
Winderslide
Greasy Coat
Road to Malvern
Bonus Track: Grigsby’s Hornpipe

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This week’s friend is Mark Simos, fiddler and professor at Berklee College of Music. I visited him in his home back in February when I took my Boston trip. I didn’t know Mark at all prior to our session, but both Mark Kilianski and Adam Hurt recommended him, so my expectations were high. And I wasn’t disappointed! Mark’s a fantastic fiddler and he has a lot of ideas about what music is and why it’s important; traditional music especially. So, basically the perfect Get Up in the Cool guest. It was nice to not feel like I was being self-indulgent when I wanted to wax philosophical about fiddle tunes, he was right there with me. But, don’t get the wrong idea, this is by no means an overly talky episode. Mark curated a great jam of great versions of great tunes, with an emphasis on effective, intentional simplicity. I’m really excited for you to hear it!
Tunes we’ll play:
Old Aunt Jenny With Her Nightcap On
Old Billy Hell
Poor Little Johnny’s Gone to the War
Duck River
Shaking Down the Acorns
aking Down the ShAcorns
Bonus Track: Run All Night

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. This week’s friend is Aaron Olwell! We recorded in Charlottesville, Virginia on my recent trip South. Aaron is a fantastic fiddler and clarinetist, and I’m sure he plays lots of other things too. In fact, I think we met in a jam at my first Clifftop, and he was flatfooting while playing a double slide whistle. That was years ago, and it was the middle of the night, but I’m pretty sure that was Aaron. Anyway, there’s no antics in today’s interview, just some neat tunes of Aaron’s choosing, some hot fiddling, some ambitious banjo playing, a very unique cumberland gap, and a little chat about what makes Aaron tick.
Tunes we’ll play:

Bumblebee in a Jug
Lost Girl
Knoxville Rag
Cumberland Gap
Magnolia One-Step
Bonus Track: Grey Eagle

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This week’s friend is fiddler and songwriter Jordan Rast. Jordan grew up going to clifftop, and he shared a lot of fun stories that I vicariously enjoyed. Most people sort of stumble upon or wander into Old Time Music, but Jordan was raised on the stuff. It’s always interesting, hearing people like Jordan talk about this music; he’s not a fanatic, like most folks who find Old Time as adults, like me. To Jordan, it’s just sort of a given, more akin to going home to visit your folks. He has an appreciation for the tradition that’s had time to settle, but the Old Time is rooted a lot deeper in him than it is in most folks.

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. This week’s episode is very special to me; it’s my interview and jam with Carl Baron. My friend Stephen Landis, former and probably future guest of the show, taught me my first tunes, but Carl Baron hosted my first old time jam, and that’s when, for better or worse, my life took a turn. He’s another one of those people that I’ve spent a lot of time with and barely know, because we’re too busy playing tunes to talk.
So I learned a lot about Carl in this interview, and not just through our verbal conversation. Before recording this episode, I mostly associated him with the chestnuts that are typically played at the mermaid inn jam in Germantown, Philadelphia. Playing one on one with Carl is a much different experience; his old time palette is very sophisticated and he draws from a deep well of musical knowledge and experience. And the man likes some quirky tunes.
Tunes we play:
Rickett’s Hornpipe
Black Cat in the Briar Patch
Little Rose
Old Christmas Morning
Yew Piney Mountain
Bonus Track: L&N Rag

As transmitters of the tradition, we’re simultaneously channeling our sources, while becoming the source for someone else. Joe Dawson’s impact wasn’t far reaching, but it was deep, and thanks to good, faithful people like Deb Shebish, his influence is just going to keep growing. And it’s going to mix with Deb’s influence, which is extremely far reaching and just as deep.

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This week’s friend is fiddler Don Stratton, and he has some original old time tunes to share with a northern flavor. We recorded this in Alan Kaufman’s cabin during the Fiddlin’ Bear festival at Lake Genero in the Poconos; making it the final installment of that day’s marathon recording session.
Most of the tunes in this episode are featured in Don’s CD with former guest of the show, Alan Kaufman, so if you want to hear the studio versions, go to peapatchmusic.com and order a copy or download the album. It’s a very good CD; there’s some really inspired stuff in there, including my new tune crush, Don’s original melody titled New Harbor, which we play in this episode.

It’s a very good CD; there’s some really inspired stuff in there, including my new tune crush, Don’s original melody titled New Harbor, which we play in this episode.

This week’s friend is the award winning clawhammer banjoist, old time fanatic, and fiddler, Ludvig Drevfjäll. I’m really glad I had the opportunity to ask him about his story, because usually when we get together, we get straight to banjo playing and there’s not a lot of talking.

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This episode is a great departure from the fiddling you can expect to hear on this program, because my guest is Trip Henderson and his bag of harmonicas. We talk about the harmonica’s role in old time music, which led Trip to invent my new favorite word, which is: banjoistically. Also, we talk briefly about the Old Time community’s brief love affair with Tim Kaine, which in retrospect is just bittersweet to hear.

This week’s friend is one of the first people I met at my first ever Clifftop, melodic clawhammer banjoist Bertram Levy. We recorded this late in the week at the Keith McManus tent, so there’s a lot of background noise, but I think it makes a nice, bustling ambiance for our competing bum-diddies. And trigger warning: this episode is all banjo duets.

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This is the last episode of 2016! As awful as this year has been, what with the fascists and the celebrity deaths, I’ve had such a great time recording this show; I think it became a real coping mechanism for me, honestly. I hope it’s been helpful for you, too. This week I’m sharing my jam and chat with Old Time cellist, Gordon Arnold. Gordon is super adventurous, which you know I love, but he’s also very rooted in the tradition.

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. This week’s and next week’s friend is Alan Kaufman! Also joining us is Don Stratton on guitar, who will be featured in his own episode in the near future. Alan is a tunesmith and a songsmith; while most of us make withdrawals from the traditional music bank, Alan makes regular deposits. This week’s episode is dedicated to his original fiddle tunes and next week we’ll play and sing his original songs. Alan possesses that rare combination of whimsy and thoughtfulness necessary to make the perfect neo-traditional tune. If you play Old Time, maybe try to learn a few from this episode. I especially recommend learning “Five Bales of Hay.”

<itunes:subtitle>Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. This week’s guest, Stephen Landis, is a close friend of mine, and I often look to him when I’m contemplating how to be; which is why I’m releasing his interview now, even though I only recorded it a week or so ago.
Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. How are you doing? It’s been a rough week. I know I’ve been feeling anxious, pent up. Some of you have been binge listening NPR and Facebooking yourselves to sleep; just leaning into to the discomfort. Others of you, like me, have been checking out. Deleting social media apps on your phone, engaging in lots of escapism; maybe overeating a bit. This week’s guest, Stephen Landis, is a close friend of mine, and I often look to him when I’m contemplating how to be; which is why I’m releasing his interview now, even though I only recorded it a week or so ago. Also, Stephen introduced me to Old Time, and I’m very grateful to him. Not just for teaching me my first tunes, but for sharing his reverence for the tradition.

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. This week’s friend is Alex Lacquement, and he’s a bassist! A Get Up in the Cool first, and hopefully not the last. Alex plays Old Time music with a lot of freedom, but he has a keen sense for exercising restraint. It’s pretty rare to find someone who excels at both leading and following; in music, but also, in general.

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. The Old Time community is of full of internal rock stars. Some of them realize how impressive they are and they act accordingly, and I’m not trying to throw shade, I think everyone appreciates a little well-earned swagger. But for every conspicuous virtuoso, there are dozens of humble, unassuming musicians who are utter revelations on their instruments.
My guest today, Ron Buchanan, is an Old Time bodhisattva. He’s one of the warmest, gentlest souls in the community; he’ll play with anyone, anytime, and thank them for it. But nobody plays the fiddle like Ron. He’s especially good at breathing life into tired, overplayed tunes. In the latter half of the show we play Spotted Pony, Arkansas Traveler, and Soldier’s Joy, basically Free Bird, Stairway to Heaven and a third culturally relevant example. It was like playing them for the first time again. Ron loves old time music, and he plays it with a joyfulness that is thoroughly earned.

Also, joining us as accompanists are Peter Oswald on cello and Alan Carr on guitar. Between Jane’s whimsical talent, Peter’s unparalleled thoughtfulness and taste, Alan’s deep and diverse musical wisdom and, I like to think, my enabling spirit, we had quite the jam.
_UPDATE: _
This episode was recorded at the Appalachian String Band Festival in August 2016 and released on October 12, 2016. In July 2017 Pappas pled guilty (http://tennesseestar.com/2017/07/25/former-university-of-alabama-professor-pleads-guilty-to-child-pornography-charges/?fbclid=IwAR2KzoZbfzP8jt3c0TOpMcCkpFJClzwPpYApbYwkEs05vqmaqXEpwcSQ1Lk) to charges of receiving and possessing child pornography (https://www.justice.gov/usao-ndal/pr/former-ua-music-professor-charged-receiving-possessing-child-pornography?fbclid=IwAR1cIKCbbsdxveWpkTvysM8oMDhYXbgdHGHMoCl6rFrFUXhg5D4N7eQ-bSU). In November 2017 he was sentenced to serve six years in federal prison (https://www.tuscaloosanews.com/news/20171130/former-ua-music-teacher-sentenced-on-child-porn-charges?fbclid=IwAR3ulw9LP775D5i6GGO2OZc1cdbIlcJNoEVmu8jHIdxCloI7IBlUZb9xC1E).
The rest of the show notes are the complete original post from October 12, 2016. His album Lost in the Lowlands has been removed from June Appal Recordings; the link no longer works.
Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. This week’s friend was named Kentucky Master Fiddle Player by The National Endowment of the Arts, and I’m real proud to have him on the show. His name is Nikos Pappas, and he’s got trills for days. Also, he’s got his PhD in Musicology and Ethnomusicology, so by the end of this episode, you’ll know what a “negative tropism” is and how to use it in your day to day life. But, academic as he is, Nikos has a very earnest love for this music and its history; you can hear it in his playing and his stories. You’re really going to like this one.

Jody Kruskal is definitely one of my favorite people to play with; when I’m wandering around at night at the festivals I listen for that unique quality that only jams with concertinas can have; it’s like you meeting a german hiker on the appalachian trail; foreign but compatible.

Welcome to episode 12 of Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. This week’s episode is the second installment in the Baltimore Boys trilogy, featuring Luke Chohany: a fantastic old time and bluegrass guitarist, and I gotta say… he really does have a lovely voice; we take a sweet little break from being rowdy boys and Luke sings a couple and it is fine, fine, fine singing.

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. This week’s friend is Alex Kramer. When we recorded this I really didn’t know anything about him, but I knew that I liked his playing quite a bit and I perceived him to be a bit of an eccentric. I’ll let you be the judge of that. We were unable to come up with an official theme for our jam, but here’s a sampling of what you can look forward to in the next hour:
We play Isham Monday’s Old Time Fire on the Mountain
I have a moment of pride when I successfully make it through a particularly squirrely tune
Alex explores the obstacles of starting your own religion
I make the following cultural references and take their ubiquity for granted:
Kristen Wiig, the Transporter movies, PT Cruisers
And at one point, Alex says, “Come on, old paint, lets get up this hill.” And for some reason, I can’t stop thinking about it.
All that’s to say, this one’s a real mix-tape, musically and conversationally, but it’s all good, and I’m glad you get to be a fly on the wall for what is essentially our first of hopefully many hangs. Stick around after the interview to find out how to hear more of Alex’s music, how to support Get Up in the Cool and where to listen to this week’s Bonus Track.
Alex Kramer, everybody. Enjoy!

Hi friends! I hope you’re all ready to Get Up in the Cool, by which I mean, get transported to a magical fairy land because this week for episode 10 Deb Justice brought her hammered dulcimer. Deb has her PhD in ethnomusicology, so she’s real nerdy about this stuff, which, as you should know by now, is very welcome on this show! Also, she’s quite snarky, because she has to be; there’s a social cost to playing hammered dulcimer in the old time community, which I don’t understand, because it’s a captivating instrument, but I’ll let her explain that in more detail.
Stick around after the interview for details on how to support the show and get access to this week’s bonus track! Also, there is an accompanying video, so make sure to click on the link in the episode’s description and share it on Facebook!

In a way, Brian is more old time than my nerdiest guests (God bless them); his sources are all relational. Also, he lets the folk process do its work; Brian likes to say that he isn’t “precious” about “what the tune is.”
Big thanks to Harry Bolick and Pat Schories for hosting this episode at their beautiful home and feeding us wonderful food. Stick around after the interview for details on how to support the show and get access to this week’s bonus track: another tune from my jam with Brian and Harry with the ever-so-quaint title: Rats Gone to Rest.

This episode features three clawhammer banjo duets, which you don't hear everyday (hopefully). There's an exciting tension to these recordings; lining up bum-diddies (the basic clawhammer stroke) is no easy task. But I think we made something special, and I hope you agree. Also, I found out Brad's a straight-up DJ! Dude's pro in an interview; I've got a lot to learn.
