<description>Get Up in the Cool features conversations and musical collaborations with some of Old Time music's heaviest hitters, like Ken Perlman, Adam Hurt, Spencer &amp; Rains, and Jake Blount. As an interviewer, Cameron balances an effusive curiosity for the potential of traditional music with a dogged respect for its origins. Serving as audience surrogate, Cameron asks illuminating questions to Old Time's best and brightest while telling the larger story of the tradition's modern era.

<description>Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! I have a really special friend this week: Peter Mawanga! Peter is a long-time collaborator with former Get Up in the Cool guest Andrew Finn Magill, and when they were on their way through Philly, Finn recommended I get Peter in front of a mic. I was really nervous about it, because Peter is from Malawi, and African rhythms, in general, are way outside my comfort zone. I profoundly don’t understand them. But Peter was lovely and patient and disarming, and he spoon fed me all the polyrhythms.
Tunes we’ll play:
Samala (Original Malawian Song)
Chigule (Original Gule Wamkulu Dance)
Nanga Iwe (What About You) (Traditional Malawian Hymn)
Lost Indian (Featuring Peter on Sansi)
Seneca Square Dance (Featuring Peter on Talking Drum)
Ona (Traditional Malawian Dance)
Bonus Track: Rocking in the Weary Land
